Oral sex can be foreplay or it can be a pleasurable and satisfying sexual experience by itself. Oral sex is simply placing the genitals in contact with the mouth. For women its called cunnilingus. Cunnilingus involves stimulating the women with the man’s tongue in her vagina. For men its called fellatio, which involves having the penis sucked, licked and kissed.
But is it safe? The fact is that oral sex is not without some risk of sexually transmitted disease (STD).
Like any unprotected sex, unprotected oral sex can carry risks. For example, slight tears, abrasions or sores on the gums can be an open door to receiving disease. Its well documented that herpes can be can be transmitted from genitals to mouth or mouth to genitals during unprotected oral sex.
But there are ways to greatly reduce the threat of contacting or spreading STDs during oral sex. Here are just a few:
Use a condom when performing fellatio on a man. Some will complain that condoms leave a rubbery taste or decrease the sensation on the penis. However, ultra-thin condoms and even condoms with tastes are now available.
When performing cunnilingus on a woman, try using a latex dental dam instead. They are effective in the prevention of STD transmission and now come in a variety of flavors.
- Avoid coming in the mouth and, if you do, spit it out immediately.
- Avoid oral sex if you see any sores on the man’s penis or if you notice sores or a unusual odor on the vagina.
- Avoid deep thrusting. It may cause damage to the throat and thereby increase the chances for disease.
